The Western Ghats

‘To conserve, to sustain, to heal’ – that is the ethos of Hilton Shillim. And the retreat gets off to a good start with its majestic setting of the Western Ghats. A UNESCO World Heritage site, this ribbon of mountains, cloaked in evergreen forest, is known as one of the world’s 10 ‘hottest hot spots’ for biodiversity, home to more than 5,000 species of flowering plants (many medicinal).

Explore further and you will happen upon the hotel’s 70-acre wellness zone which is equally well-placed – built on the highest concentration of underground crystals on the estate to ensure the channeling of positive energy into the 17 therapy rooms.

Ayurveda and holistic back-to-nature activities

The Western Ghats (otherwise known as the mountain of benevolence) has a deeply spiritual heritage, a landscape of flora and fauna, and one of India’s most sacred rivers, the Godavari, which cascades through the mountains – which makes this the ideal location for guests wanting to redefine their lifestyle according to the Dharana way of life, through wholesome food, bodywork and holistic healing.

Ayurveda is the big thing at Hilton Shillim. One of the most ancient forms of medicine in the world, it is not so much a practice of treating illness, more a science of life focusing on the mind and body. The belief is that not only are the two inextricably connected, but also that nothing has more power to heal and transform the body than the mind. Central to this healing is knowing your dosha (body type) – either Vata, Pitta or Kapha – biological energies which govern all mental and physical function of the body.
